What happens during your massage

01

Check in on how you feel

We ask how many weeks pregnant you are, how you have been feeling and whether your midwife or GP has mentioned anything to be careful of. Tell us about any swelling, pain or dizziness.

02

Get comfortable on your side

Cushions go under your head, between your knees and in front of your bump. Take your time settling. You can ask for more support, or to turn over, whenever you need.

03

Back, hips and shoulders

Slow strokes work along the back and around the hips, where the extra weight is often felt most. The pressure stays gentle, with no deep work and no pressure on the stomach.

04

Legs and a slow finish

The legs are worked with light strokes moving upwards. At the end you sit up gradually, rest for a moment and have some water before standing.

When to book a pregnancy massage

Many therapists prefer clients to be past the first 12 weeks of pregnancy before having massage. It is a common, cautious approach rather than a fixed rule, and it is the reason we ask how many weeks you are when you enquire.

Before you book, check with your midwife or GP that massage is fine for you. This matters most if you have been told your pregnancy is high risk, or you have high blood pressure, bleeding or any condition you are being monitored for. If anything changes between booking and the day, let us know and we can move the appointment.

Why side lying, and why cushions

Lying on your front is not possible with a bump, and lying flat on your back for a long time can feel uncomfortable later in pregnancy. Side lying with cushions avoids both. A pillow between the knees keeps the hips level, and one under the bump takes its weight so your back can let go.

Working on one side at a time also lets the therapist reach the lower back, the bottom and the outer hip, which is often where pregnancy aches build up. Halfway through, you roll to the other side and the cushions move with you.

How it differs from a standard massage

The pressure is lighter, particularly on the legs, and leg strokes move upwards rather than down. There is no deep work on the calves or inner thighs.

We suggest unscented oil unless you ask otherwise, because smells can seem much stronger when you are pregnant. If you feel too warm, lightheaded or simply need the toilet, say so. Pausing for a minute is completely fine, and so is sitting up for the last part.

Pregnancy massage questions

Can I have a massage in the first trimester?

Many therapists prefer to wait until after the first 12 weeks, so we usually suggest booking from then onwards. Whatever stage you are at, check with your midwife or GP first and tell us how many weeks you are when you enquire.

Can I lie on my front during a pregnancy massage?

No. You lie on your side, supported by cushions under your head, between your knees and under your bump. Some people also like to sit up, propped with pillows, while the neck and shoulders are worked.

Is pregnancy massage safe?

Many people have gentle massage during a healthy pregnancy, but only your midwife or GP can say what is right for you. Ask them before booking, especially if you have any complications, and pass on anything they have advised.

How long should a pregnancy massage be?

We suggest 45 or 60 minutes. Lying in one position for longer can become uncomfortable later in pregnancy, and you may need a toilet break. If an hour sounds long, start with 45 minutes and see how you feel.

Can I have a massage after giving birth?

Many people book a gentle massage in the weeks after birth for a tired back and shoulders. Wait until your midwife or GP is happy, particularly after a caesarean, and tell us how you are recovering when you enquire.
